Pro-survival ER-phagy and macroautophagy degradation of cellular components in a vacuole to maintain cellular homeostasis. ER-phagy packages excessive ER abundance in ER-whorls (concentric blue circles) and degrades them within an intracellular membranous vacuole, the lysosome. Macroautophagy engulfs cytoplasmic, misfolded proteins (small, grey circles), and non-functioning, aged intracellular membranes (blue ovals) and degrades them within the lysosome.
